Travel Tip Tuesday: Earn SPG Points on every Uber ride for free!

Did you know that you could be earning valuable SPG Starwood Starpoints on every Uber ride you take? If not, this post will show you how to sign up  and what you need to do to start earning–trust me, it’s easy!

Why do you want to take advantage of this offer?

SPG points are one of the most valuable point currencies out there–easily valued at around 2.2-2.3 cents per point. This is mainly because they are easily redeemed for many high value redemptions and they are transferable to various different travel partners. The high value redemptions and great flexibility make these points extremely valuable in your portfolio. I actually used SPG points to transfer to Alaska Airlines and book Emirates First Class from JFK to Dubai. Read  about how I did that, here. So even if you are only earning a handful of SPG points at a time, they are a valuable currency that can certainly add up over time to some great redemptions!

How to earn SPG points on every Uber ride

Step 1:

If you are not already an SPG member, you need to sign up for the program here: https://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/account/enroll/index.html

While you are there, consider signing up for the SPG American Express Card with a 25,000 point sign up bonus.

Step 2:

Join Uber if you are not already a user. Or download the App on your smart phone. I love Uber because of its convenience, its competitive cost, and the ability to rate each ride. Hands down, I choose Uber over a taxi every time.

By the way, you can set up your Uber account to charge each ride automatically to a credit card. I personally choose to charge each ride to my Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, which earns 2 miles for every $1 I spend on travel, including Uber. So, I get 2 Ultimate Reward points per $1 I spend on Uber plus the extra 1 SPG point per $1 spend on the ride.

Step 3:

Link your SPG and Uber Accounts. Start here: https://www.spgpromos.com/uber/

Step 4:

Book a qualifying stay at a Starwood Property per calendar year. If you plan your stay early in the year, you have the entire rest of the year the earn SPG points. Starwood has several different property types including: Westin, Sheraton, 4 Points by Sheraton, W Hotels, The Luxury Collection, St Regis, Aloft, and Le Meridien. I stayed at an awesome Le Meridien in Siem Reap, Cambodia last month.

The earning is based on your Starwood status while staying at a SPG property (i.e. you earn more while staying with SPG):

However, anytime you are not staying at an SPG property, you are still automatically earning 1 SPG point for every $1 dollar you spend on an Uber ride–up to $10,000 in Uber spend per year!

Based on a very conservative 2 cents per point valuation, you are still automatically earning about 2% cash back on every Uber purchase–and more if you have your Uber account linked to a card that earns extra points on travel related purchases. You can really maximize this offer if you are staying at an SPG property. Not bad for free!

Step 5:

Rake in the points. I personally spend a modest $100 on average on Uber per month–which is still 1200 free SPG points per year. However, if you spend more, or use Uber while staying at SPG properties, you can really collect a lot of points. These points are fantastic for a wide variety of redemptions. Additionally, each time you earn SPG points with Uber, you extend the expiration date of your SPG points!
